How to set Photo Viewer as default in Windows 10

Windows Photo Viewer was a useful and simple tool in Windows 7. The developers of Windows 10 decided to replace the Windows Photo Viewer (default photo viewer) in favor of the modern app – Photos. Windows Photo Viewer is built into Windows 10 if you upgraded from Windows 7. If you clean installed Windows 10, then Photo Viewer was replaced by Photos and Windows Photo Viewer is now hidden.

If you upgraded to Windows 10, then find an image on your computer with File Explorer and right-click on it. Now select Open With, then Choose another app. If Windows Photo Viewer isn’t listed, click on More apps and you should see it there.

Step 1: How to Enable Windows 7 Photo Viewer on Windows 10

Sometimes Windows Photo Viewer is not present in list of photo viewers so it means the registry of it, is missing in your Windows. Photo Viewer is still there on your PC, but only as a “dll” file, and not an executable. To get it back we’ll need to create a new registry file.

For this issue, Right-click on an empty space on your desktop and select New > Text Document. Copy the following code into notepad and save it as a .reg file then merge it.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\.bmp]
@="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\.cr2]
@="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\.gif]
@="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff"
